• First played in Britain in the 1880’s as an after dinner game called "wiff-waff".
• The equipment at that time was a table, a golf ball, a row of books in the middle of the table for a net and books for paddles.
• Another version used cigar boxes for paddles and champagne corks for balls. 
• Early rackets were made of stretched parchment over a frame.  The sound of the game being played led to the name, ping pong.
• James Gibb, in 1901, discovered celluloid balls and thought they would be perfect for ping pong.
• E.C. Goode, in 1901, invented the traditional racket affixing stippled rubber to a wooden paddle.
